The tennis sensation now heads out to the US Open championship taking place from 4-10 September

Kenya’s 18-year-old tennis history maker Angella Okutoyi added another accolade to her trophy cabinet as she bagged the Girls Doubles title in the J1 Repentigny tournament that took place in Canada from 28 August to 3 September 2022.

Alongside her Polish partner Malwina Rowinska, Okutoyi, who back in July became the first Kenyan player to ever win a Grand Slam when she lifted the Wimbledon Doubles title, staged a thrilling comeback from a set down to claim the trophy after the duo beat Ella Sidel (Germany) and Amelia Waligora (Belgium) 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the nail biting finale.

To get to the championship decider, Okutoyi/Rowinska had benefitted from a walkover after the Canadian duo of Ellie Daniels and Alexia Jacobs failed to turn up for the match. Sidel/Waligora on the other hand recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Yaroslava Bartashevich (France) and Nina Vargova (Slovakia) to book their berth in the final.

The first set proved to be out of reach for Okutoyi and her partner as they fell to a 3-6 defeat. They however galvanized their efforts from that point on till the end of the match as they took the second set 6-2 before winning 10-8 in the tiebreaker to complete the comeback victory.

After using the tournament as part of her last preparations, Okutoyi now heads to the US Open high on confidence and hoping she can replicate that impressive form in the Grand Slam that takes place from 4-10 September.
